Rural farming grants subsidies update 2022

From today, wider areas of the country are eligible for grants focused on addressing water and air quality issues in rural areas. Examples of items available under water quality grants are concrete yard renewal, livestock & machinery hardcore tracks, sprayer washdown areas or roofing of a manure store, livestock gathering area, slurry of silage store. There grant items, available through the Countryside Stewardship Mid Tier and Capital Grants schemes, have previously only been available in isolated areas of the county identified as high priority areas. From 1 April 2022 eligibility has been increased to include areas which have been identified as medium priority for water quality issues, covering parts of Yorkshire, Co Durham and Northumberland which have not previously been eligible for the grant funding.

When applying for water and air quality items, farmers should engage with their local Catchment Sensitive Farming team as early as possible, providing information on their proposal, and the benefits that this will provide to alleviate identified pollution issues, affecting priority pollutants in their catchment. Grants for concrete yard renewal and roofing of muck stores have been particularly popular in the last few years, and a large demand is expected again this year, highlighting the importance of providing as much information as possible, as the Catchment Sensitive Farming team will sift proposals, and only allocate resources to investigate and support applications which provide the right options in the right places.
