Home About Blog Residential news: Making the most of your outdoor space

The recent spell of very sunny weather has many of us wishing our outdoor spaces were a bit more inviting for alfresco living. Here Rosie Spours, Branch Manager and Valuer at our Alnwick office looks at ways to make the most of your outdoor space.

The pandemic saw many of us dust off our gardening gloves and make the most of our outside spaces – and interest in gardening is showing no signs of slowing. Maintaining and utilising your outside space is a great way to add charm to your home, with lighter nights and warmer weather spending time outside is proven to help boost everyone’s mood. You don’t have to have a huge garden to enjoy alfresco dining or entertaining a small yard or patio can provide just as much delight.

In fact a small outdoor space can seem a lot larger when it acts as a continuation of your living area. Your small garden or patio can be dressed up with a furniture set, some cushions, and some solar-powered fairy lights. Choosing a similar colour scheme to your living area can make this feel even more like an extension of the space. You can then use your new outdoor area as a dining area or a space to work from home.

Add other home comforts that make you want to spend time outdoors, such as blankets, candles, and décor that you like. A hanging chair is a fantastic addition if you want to chill outside, as they make for a lovely place to unwind with your favourite book after a long day of work. There are many benefits of spending time outdoors in your garden, no matter the size, so make your small space a place you want to be.

Adding a splash of colour to your outdoor space can redirect the eye away from the size of the space. No matter how small your garden, it can look a whole lot better with the right paint job. Whether this is upcycling old furniture with a lick of paint or spray painting your plant pots, a little colour can go a long way in a small outdoor space.

There are also other ways you can use colour to your advantage to lighten up your small space. White paint is often used in small homes to give a brighter and larger appearance and the same effect can be used in your garden. White painted furniture or brickwork will give the illusion of a larger space, whilst creating a beautiful summer-themed design with serious charm.
