Home About Blog Rural News: Yorkshire Agricultural Society Women in Farming Autumn Gathering

Helen Proud & Joanne Metcalfe were delighted to attend the Yorkshire Agricultural Society Women in Farming Network Autumn Gathering last week, along with guests Kathryn Boyd, Sarah Sanderson and Kim Mawer. The event focused on information sharing, challenges faced in the industry and a celebration of women in agriculture. Helen, Joanne and their guests enjoyed informative presentations including an update from Barclays Regional Agricultural Manager, John Pinches, who described actions Barclays are taking to support their customers coping with rising pressure of farm costs. Minette Batters from the NFU (National Farmers' Union) also provided an update on the NFU’s lobbying of new government regime under Liz Truss. On a more local level, Joanne Nicholson, a farmer from Nidderdale, described the challenges she has faced marrying into the industry from a non-farming background and the plans she has for the future on her family farm.

Overall, it was really interesting to hear from people across all parts of the industry, as we all work together looking at various challenges including rising input costs, volatility of markets, changing grant and subsidy regime and variations to planning policy. It is always reassuring to speak to other women working within the agricultural industry to collaborate ideas, discuss challenges and grow our network. Whilst there are so many challenges facing the agricultural industry, change also brings ideas and perhaps cautious optimism for the future which makes it an exciting time to be part of.

"We have been working more closely with a few ladies working in the agricultural industry, gaining a better understanding of the challenges they have faced, and how the industry could evolve to be more open for new entrants from all genders and different backgrounds. The overarching feeling which we have gained from these women is how positive they all are for the future of the industry, and for their roles within the industry”, says Joanne.

The project includes 9 women from across the agricultural industry, including Joanne and of course both Becca Wilson and Lizzie McLaughlin, stars of the Boots and Heels blog. You can download your copy of the accompanying booklet and read all about their stories by clicking here.
